Regarding Windows 8 and especially IE 11, add to the browser's compatibility view list (under the browser's tools tab). Now, upon connecting the device, the computer will recognize that a device is being connected, but will not recognize the device itself, which will register as an unknown device. Some time ago, my brother's Garmin GPSmap 62s simply stopped communicating with his pc. This problem has so far managed to stump me.
